Juleve Aims To Personify Confidence Through Fashion

Tenacity Magazine had a chance to speak with the founder of Juleve Collections, Julia Takalo who shared with us her journey as a fashion designer.

Tenacity Magazine: Please kindly tell us who is Julia Takalo?

Julia Takalo: Julia Takalo is a lady who has turned herself into a brand, is a personal brand conceived based on her creative abilities and skills around art and communication. My passions and values are deeply rooted within the Afrocentric self-concept.

Tenacity Magazine: Briefly outline how did Juleve Collections come about.

Julia Takalo: Juleve came to me back when I was 16, doing grade 10 by then. I was doodling in class. I put my mother’s name and mine together and it sounded good, but I got to use it years later and defined it as a character born from two individuals. The lioness who brides herself in being a woman, soft, sensual, vulnerable, fierce, and confident.

Tenacity Magazine: What inspires your brand’s fashion designs in most cases?

Julia Takalo: Everything. I can look at my grandmother and get inspired, and also from native music. I believe creativity inspires creativity so I draw inspiration from other creators as well. The thing that keeps me going through is the story of Juleve beyond it all it keeps me on my feet and exploring life.

Tenacity Magazine: What are the aspirations, aims and objectives of your brand?

Julia Takalo: Three words “To personify confidence.”

Tenacity Magazine: What have you achieved ever since the inception of Juleve Collections?

Julia Takalo: Personal confidence.

Tenacity Magazine: What makes Juleve Collections unique from other clothing brands?

Julia Takalo: It is my story that makes Juleve Collections unique through my designs and style, and I am telling it my way.

Tenacity Magazine: What are some of the issues that affect you as a designer?

Julia Takalo: Personally, besides having a creator’s block, I have not come across any issues. I just see it as a journey with twists and turns, and to me that is what makes it worth it.

Tenacity Magazine: What plans do you have for the brand (Where do you see your brand in the next 5 years from now on)?

Julia Takalo: I am one person who just works and keeps working. I will tell you in 5 years where Juleve Collections is. I will tell you this through a Museum that is on the list.

Julia Takalo: Any lady with a story and ready to tell it through fashion.

Tenacity Magazine: What trends are you following currently as a brand in order to stay relevant in the market?

Julia Takalo: We do not follow trends. We set them.

Tenacity Magazine: There is so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers who are just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?

Julia Takalo: First and foremost, when you are confident in your art and have a deep understanding that no one can do you like you and trust in your talent you experience no pressure, but just by making it the best it can be.
