Tenacity Magazine caught up with Teboho Hlapane, an author of “A Leader Untitled and Unleashed” and a Civil Engineering student, to discuss his love for prose and being a published author.
Please kindly tell us who is Teboho Hlapane?
My name is Teboho Hlapane, I was born and bred in a small township called Clocolan (Hlohlowane) in Free State province. I am from humble beginnings and I never wanted my socio-economic background to define my destiny. I was motivated to succeed and I live by the moto that says: ”A hero comes from dusts.”
Tell us about your educational journey?
I started my schooling journey at Kgutliso Primary School and matriculated at Sasamala Secondary School in 2012. In 2013, I enrolled for Civil Engineering at the University of Pretoria (UP) and I got a scholarship to study Civil Engineering in China during my third year at UP. I went to China in 2016 and I will complete my studies in 2021.
When did you first realise that you wanted to be an author?
I became interested in writing when I was doing grade 9 in 2009. My first love was poetry and I slowly moved more into prose and I never looked back.
You wrote a book titled “A Leader Untitled and Unleashed,” What is the book about?
This book is about pioneers and ground-breakers who carved a path that led to new frontiers. It is about unsung heroes and heroines, and also about doing well and without expecting recognition. The book tell anecdotes of small rural areas with a few role models for the young people trying to navigate life.
What motivated you to write the book?
My passion for writing drove me to write this book and the reason that I come from a Small Township with a few role models. This is a place where alcohol abuse and drug addiction is destroying most of our young people because of lack of guidance and motivation. My objective with this book is to reach souls without motivation and I want to spark infinite hope in them.
What are the challenges you encountered when writing this book?
The main challenge I encountered was lack of funds as an independent publisher with no budget. It took me over five years from 2015 to complete the book in 2019 and I was hopeless and discouraged at times. It is not easy being independent because a publishing house provides resources and a budget to cover all expenses.
How did you overcome those challenges?
I overcame those challenges by motivating and encouraging myself. I already started therefore it was too late to quit.
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing and your life in general?
Publishing my first book gave me more motivation and the power to do more. I realized that all things are possible with right attitude. I am now a published author. It feels good and I see life through different lenses now.
Who do you aim to reach with your book?
With this book, I aim to reach the broken hearted, the people that gave up and those who concluded already that they don’t want to live anymore. I just want to spark their lives and refresh them like Devine breeze.
How do people get your book? Is it available in stores?
The book is currently available at Amazon, my young brother Thabo Rooi at Clocolan and myself here in China.
Any new and exciting things that you would like to share?
I wrote a motivational book, three poetry books which are not yet published and I am currently busy writing a novel. I will be having a book launch next year July at Soshanguve Block BB Library.
